WMU Heads to Milwaukee for Panther Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  –  In its final road non-conference tournament the Western Michigan volleyball team heads to Milwaukee to take on Butler, Southeast Missouri St., and Milwaukee at the Panther Invitational, Sept. 13-14.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan heads into the weekend one of just 23 teams in NCAA Division I to have a perfect record, entering with an overall record of 6-0. The Broncos are coming off back-to-back tournament victories at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational and the Rambler Challenge.

Party Like It's 1996
This season marks the first time WMU has begun a season 6-0 since doing so back in 1996. In 1996, WMU began 8-0.

1,000 Program Wins
Last Friday against Montana State, Western Michigan volleyball secured its 1,000th program victory, becoming the first Mid-American Conference school to do so. WMU also became just the 26th program in NCAA Division I history to eclipse the 1,000-win mark.

Swept the MAC West Weekly Awards….(again)
For the second week in a row, the Broncos swept the MAC West weekly awards. Junior Rachel Bontrager earned MAC West Offensive player of the week honors while senior Kathleen Reilly earned Defensive player of the week honors. The duo of freshman Rose Duffy and Mary Marzo shared the honor for MAC West setters of the week.

Bontrager Nearing 1,000
Rachel Bontrager is on the cusp of etching her name in the Bronco record book, needing just 45 kills to earn 1,000 for her career. Bontrager leads the MAC heading into the weekend with 100 kills, averaging 3.85 per set.

MAC Ranks
Western Michigan enters the weekend as one of the best offensive teams in the conference. The Brown & Gold lead the MAC in team hitting percentage (.270) and rank second in assists per set (13.35) and kills per set (13.59).

Scouting the Opponents
Butler – Butler has an overall record of 1-5 with its lone victory coming at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Ala., against Tennessee State. Last weekend, the Bulldogs went 0-3 at the Bowling Green Invitational, falling to Cleveland State, Bowling Green and Charlotte.

Southeast Missouri St. – SEMO is 4-3 on the season and is coming off a five-set loss on Tuesday at Southern Illinois. Last weekend the RedHawks won their home tournament, sweeping all three matches against Jackson State, Western Illinois and Evansville.

Milwaukee – As the host school, Milwaukee enters the weekend with a 5-1 record and finished 2-1 last weekend at the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa. Last weekend the Panthers dropped a five-set match to Eastern Washington before rebounding with a pair of victories over Saint Louis and Drake.

On the Horizon
Following the weekend Western Michigan concludes non-conference play at home, hosting the Delta Hotel by Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament, Sept. 20-21. The Broncos kick-off the tournament on Friday, Sept. 20 against IUPUI and Auburn before ending the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21 against in-state foe Michigan State.
