Whittington Joins Dallas Mavericks for NBA Summer League

KALAMAZOO, Mich. –  Former Western Michigan men's basketball standout Shayne Whittington will take part in 2019 NBA Summer League action in the upcoming weeks as part of the Dallas Mavericks.

Whittington played for the Broncos from 2009 to 2013 and was a two-time All-MAC selection earning First Team honors during his senior campaign along with Second Team honors in 2012. Whittington is one of 42 players to score over 1,000 points for the Brown & Gold, ending his career with 1,119.

Whittington is also third in school history in career blocks (130) and sixth in double-doubles (27). During the 2013-14 season, Whittington averaged 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game to help WMU claim the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament title.

Last season in Spain, Whittington played for two different clubs and averaged 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 20.1 minutes per game over 45 contests. The Paw Paw, Mich., native went undrafted in 2014 but played for the Indiana Pacers during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.  

During his career, Whittington has taken part in the summer league three separate times with his last outing in 2017 with the San Antonio Spurs. With the Spurs, Whittington averaged 8.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.3 blocks in 22.5 minutes per game.

After the preliminary round of the NBA Summer League, the top eight teams will be seeded in a tournament that ends with the championship game on July 15. Teams that don't qualify for the tournament will play in consolation games.
