JACKSONVILLE, Fla., -- Western Michigan track and field's Erin Dowd and Sarah Anderson both advanced to Friday's quarterfinals of the NCAA East Preliminary Championships after a day of competition at the University of North Florida on Thursday.
Dowd finished in second place her heat of the 400-meter hurdles to automatically qualify for Friday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m. The Brighton, Mich., native ran a time of 58.97 seconds, ranking 20th overall on the day.
Anderson also finished second in her heat to automatically qualify for Friday's quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. The redshirt junior ran a time of 2:06.09, her fastest of the season and the 18th overall fastest time on the day.
Both advance at the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Championships for the first time in their careers.
Junior Madison Meredith fell short of moving on in the 100-meter dash, but did break the school record in the progress. Meredith ran a time of 11.63 seconds but was just five spots out of the top 24 needed to advance. The sprinter's time breaks the old program record of 11.71 seconds set by Joy Eloms back in 2008.
Senior Audrey Oswalt wrapped up her career in the javelin, throwing a distance of 129' 1" (39.35m).
