Baseball Edged in Series Finale at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio  – In the series finale Western Michigan baseball dropped a 5-0 decision at Miami on Sunday afternoon inside McKie Field at Hayden Park.

The Broncos were held to just four hits on the afternoon, coming from four different players. WMU's third ranked offense in the Mid-American Conference was shutout for just the second time this season.

The trio of seniors Andrew Stone and Jimmy Roche along with junior Drew Devine each went 1-for-4 at the plate while fellow senior Cooper Marshall went 1-for-3.

Sophomore Blake Dunn went 0-for-3 in game three but reached base thanks to a Miami error in the top of the fourth inning. Dunn proceeded to steal his 29th base of the season, moving him into sole possession of second for most stolen bases in a single-season in school history. The sophomore outfielder is three stolen bases away from breaking the school record set by Joel DeVisser back in 1998.

In relief, junior RHP Tyler Thorington shut down the Miami offense throwing a career-high six innings, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out two. Thorington retired seven of the final 10 batters he faced.

Western Michigan heads into the final weekend of the regular season with an overall record of 17-29 and 10-12 in conference play. The Broncos will conclude the season with a pivotal three-game series versus Ohio at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field, May 16-18. The Broncos currently hold the final spot in the upcoming MAC Tournament by a half game over Ohio.

The Brown & Gold looked to build off its momentum from game two's 6-3 victory, placing runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the first. However, a fielder's choice followed by back-to-back strikeouts ended the Broncos' early scoring threat.

Miami got on the board in the top of the second thanks to a two-run home run over the left field wall to take a 2-0 lead. The RedHawks extended their lead in the bottom of the third with a three-run home run to gain a 5-0 advantage after three innings of play.

WMU put a runner in scoring position just twice after the third inning, as Dunn reached base on an error in the top of the fourth followed by stealing second. In the top of the seventh, Devine led off the inning with a double to left center field before being stranded on second after a strikeout and back-to-back fly outs.

In game three, the Broncos left five runners on the base paths compared to Miami's three. WMU who came into the game with the MAC's top fielding percentage committed no errors while the RedHawks committed. The Brown & Gold also turned two double plays in the series finale.
