MUNCIE, Ind. – Senior Allison Hufnagel took second place in the heptathlon and junior sprinter Madison Meredith broke the school record in the 100-meter dash to highlight day two of the 2019 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships for the Western Michigan track and field team on Friday.
Hufnagel was sitting in fourth place in the heptathlon after four events on Thursday and finished strong in the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run to finish with 4,776 points. She earned eight points toward WMU's team score and was one of three Broncos to score on the day. With her second place finish comes Second Team All-MAC honors, a first for Hufnagel in her career.
Junior Erica Sheahan scored in the long jump after placing sixth with a distance of 18' 9.25" (5.72m), earning three points. Sophomore Abena Atuobi was WMU's other scorer, taking seventh in the shot put with a distance of 49' 5" (15.06m) to earn two points.
Meredith had the top performance in the preliminaries for the Broncos. After turning in the second-fastest qualifying time in the 200-meter dash on Thursday, she broke the school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.66 seconds, shattering the previous record of 11.71 held by Joy Eloms, set back in 2008. Meredith is now set to compete in the finals of both sprint races on Saturday.
Also turning in the top qualifying time in her event was junior Sarah Anderson. Anderson, who has held the top time in the MAC in the 800-meter run for most of the outdoor season, claimed the top qualifying spot after running a time of 2:10.24. Fellow junior Erin Dowd quailed for her second final after running a time of 55.19 seconds to advance to Saturday's final in the 400-meter dash.
Western Michigan currently sits in seventh place with 17 points but is just 5.5 points shy of fourth place.
Saturday wraps up the meet with Broncos competing in the finals of the triple jump, discus, high jump, 4x100-meter relay, 400-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay.
