KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team competed outdoors at Sorensen Courts for the first time this spring, defeating the University of Akron 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.Â
With the win, the Broncos improve to 11-8 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference.Â
Akron opened the match with a win on court one in doubles, but WMU wins by Lyubomirova/Tjon-A-Joe on court two and Azcui/Slavova on court three granted the home team the doubles point.Â
The Zips tied the match at 2-2 in singles play, winning on courts one and three while Tjon-A-Joe won at court four. Azcui and Tiraspolsky both earned wins in two sets to clinch the match.Â
"I couldn't be happier for this group," said head coach
Ryan Tomlinson. "They continue to stay the course and work each day. This was our first competitive tennis outside since October. We battled today and the result was a great win against a very good Akron team. The doubles point was huge again for us."
