Broncos Earn Series Victory over BGSU with Doubleheader Split

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Western Michigan baseball claimed its second straight Mid-American Conference series on Sunday after splitting its doubleheader at Bowling Green, falling in the first game 4-3 before winning the series finale, 4-2.

It's the first time since 2016 the Broncos have won a series at Bowling Green and have now won eight of the last 11 match-ups against the Falcons. WMU has won back-to-back MAC series for the first time since defeating Central Michigan (Apr. 20-22) and Eastern Michigan (Apr. 27-29) last season.

With the series victory WMU improves its overall record to 13-23 and 6-7 in conference play. The Broncos are on the road next weekend for a three-game series at in-state rival Central Michigan, April 26-28.

As a team in the three-game series the Broncos hit .279 with 12 runs scored on 29 hits. WMU was dominant on the mound over the weekend, posting a 2.03 ERA and holding BGSU to a .265 batting average.

Sophomore Sean O'Keefe led the Brown & Gold offense over the weekend with a .500 batting average while fellow sophomore Blake Dunn hit .462 with three runs scored and a team-high three RBIs. Senior Nate Grys matched Dunn with three RBIs over the weekend going 3-for-10 at the plate with one run scored.

On Sunday, WMU had five players hit over .300 with Dunn and O'Keefe each registering a batting average of .444 with two runs scored. Grys in the doubleheader action was 2-for-6 with three RBIs and recorded a .500 on-base percentage.

Game One (WMU 3, BGSU 4)
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, Western Michigan held a 3-2 lead until the bottom of the ninth before BGSU scored two runs on three hits to tie the series at one with a 4-3 victory.

The Bronco offense scored three runs on eight hits, collecting one run in the third, fifth and sixth innings. At the plate WMU was led by sophomore Sean O'Keefe who went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and a run scored. It was O'Keefe's first career triple and seventh multi-hit game of the season.

Senior Jimmy Roche notched his fifth multi-RBI game of the season after a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with two of the Broncos' three RBIs. Fellow senior Nate Grys registered the third RBI for the Brown & Gold, going 1-for-4.

On the mound WMU got a stellar performance from freshman RHP Brady Miller. Miller threw 4.2 innings allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out a career-high six batters. In relief, fellow freshman Dane Armbrustmacher shut down the Falcon offense with 2.2 innings of scoreless and hitless work with three strikeouts.

The Broncos got on the board first in the top of the third with one run on one hits along with two stolen bases. After back-to-back strikeouts to begin the inning, senior Cooper Marshall drew a walk and then stole second base, his fourth of the season. Sophomore Blake Dunn was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for Roche who lined an RBI single to centerfield to give WMU a 1-0 lead.

Bowling Green bounced back in the bottom of the third as an RBI single back up the middle plated the Falcon runner from second to tie the game at 1-1. BGSU took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth with a home run over the right field wall.

Trailing 2-1 the Bronco offense rallied with two outs in the top of the fifth. Redshirt senior Andrew stone led off the inning with a single prior to moving into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt. Later in the inning, Roche delivered once again with an RBI single, scoring Stone and tying the game at 2-2.

WMU regained the lead in the top of the sixth as WMU posted runners on the corners with no outs for senior Nate Grys. Grys roped an RBI single to left field, scoring O'Keefe to propel the Broncos back in front 3-2.

However, in the bottom of the ninth the Falcon offense came to life scoring two runs on three hits to secure the 4-3 victory. With the bases loaded and two outs, BGSU's Ty Suntken laced an RBI single that just got past the glove of Devine at shortstop to tie the series.

Game Two (WMU 4, BGSU 2)
It was a comeback effort for the Broncos in the series finale, scoring four unanswered runs including three in the top of the eighth for a 4-2 game three victory.

The Broncos were held scoreless and hitless through the first five innings of play but managed to rattle off four runs on 10 hits for the series clinching victory. WMU had three players register multi-hit games along with Nate Grys earning his fifth multi-RBI game.

Leading the way at the plate was Blake Dunn who went 3-for-5 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Dunn's team-leading fifth home run of the season was WMU's first hit of the ballgame.

Hitting seventh in the line-up, Nate Grys went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and drew two walks against the Falcons. The Sterling Heights, Mich., native delivered the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth, lacing a two RBI single to WMU a two-run advantage.

Sean O'Keefe continued his stellar day at the plate in game two, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and one run scored. O'Keefe captured his eighth multi-hit game of the season and sixth two-hit game.

Getting the starting nod in the series finale, redshirt junior Jack Szott went five innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. The Bronco bullpen shut down the Falcon offense the final four innings of play, allowing no runs on just three hits with four strikeouts.

Bowling Green jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run home run over the left field wall to take a 2-0 advantage.

Western Michigan was held hitless through the first 5.1 innings of play before Dunn stepped to the plate with one out in the top of the sixth. The sophomore outfielder blasted his fifth home run of the season to cut the deficit down to one through six innings.

Trailing 2-1 the Bronco offense erupted in the top of the eighth for three runs on four hits. Dunn led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and then was moved to second after a sacrifice bunt. In the next at-bat, Sean O'Keefe tied the game thanks to an RBI single into centerfield that scored Dunn and tied the game at 2-2.

Senior Jesse Forestell roped his second double of the game down the right field line to give WMU runners on second and third with one out before Nate Grys stepped to the plate. After taking a few pitches, Grys smacked a two-RBI single to score both runners and give WMU a 4-2 advantage.

BGSU looked to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out before Will Mullen got a strikeout followed by a ground out to end the scoring threat. In the bottom of the ninth, Mullen sat down the Falcons in order to clinch WMU's second straight conference series.
