Three Score in Double Figures for WMU in Loss at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Seniors Seth Dugan and Josh Davis along with sophomore Michael Flowers each scored in double figures on Tuesday night as Western Michigan men's basketball fell to Toledo, 76-57 inside Savage Arena.

Flowers led all scorers with 21 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field to go along with two rebounds, three assists and one steal. Flowers made his mark at the free-throw line against the Rockets going 10-of-13. It's the 24th game this season in which Flowers has scored in double figures and the 12th game having at least 20 points.

For the first time since Jan. 26, senior Josh Davis scored in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The senior guard tallied all 12 of his points in the second half and corralled five rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes played.

Rounding out the double digit scoring trio was senior Seth Dugan who was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds on 41 percent (5-of-12) shooting from the field. Of Dugan's nine rebounds, seven were on the offensive glass.

With two guaranteed games remaining, Dugan is tied for second in school history for double-doubles in a season (14) and needs two more to tie the mark set by Booker James (16) back in 1986-87.

As a team the Broncos shot 37.3 percent from the field and were held to just 2-of-14 from three-point range. WMU forced Toledo to commit 17 turnovers on the night, scoring 14 points off those turnovers. The Broncos were outrebounded 35-28 but held a slim 8-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

With one game remaining in the regular season, Western Michigan sits with an overall record of 8-22, 2-15 in Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos will return home for its season finale on Friday, March 8 against in-state rival Central Michigan. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. inside University Arena.

WMU kept the game to within three in the opening minutes of the first half as Flowers scored eight of the first 12 points for the Broncos en route to a 13-12 deficit at the 12-minute mark. The Broncos tied the game up a minute later after a steal by freshman DJ Houston that led to a fast break lay-up by fellow freshman Patrick Emilien to tie the game at 14-14.

The Toledo offense caught fire over the next five minutes of play, embarking on a 15-2 run to lead 29-16 with five minutes to play in the first half. The Rockets ultimately jumped out to a 40-20 lead late in the first half in large part to WMU going scoreless from the field for nearly five minutes including the last 2:30 of play. WMU trails 42-23 at halftime.

In the second half the Broncos played even with the Rockets as both teams scored 34 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Dugan got going early in the second half, scoring four straight points to cut into the Toledo lead.

WMU made three straight field goals to cut its deficit down to 49-31 at the 15-minute mark prior to Toledo connecting on four straight field goals to extend its lead back to 54-31. With 11:20 remaining, WMU embarked on a 7-0 run with five straight coming from Davis to cut into the Toledo lead.

After holding Toledo scoreless for nearly five minutes and the Rockets making just one of their next nine from the field, the Broncos cut their lead down to 14 at the 7:59 mark.  However, the Broncos went scoreless the next three minutes of play as Toledo grew its lead back to 18 with four minutes to play.

Down the stretch the Broncos deployed a full court press the last five minutes of the game but was unable to catch up with the Rocket offense in the 72-56 loss. Toledo had five score in double figures with Nate Navigato leading the way with 17 points.
