Men’s Basketball Falls to CMU, 82-75

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  – Playing in their final game inside University Arena, seniors Josh Davis and Seth Dugan combined to score 41 points as Western Michigan men's basketball fell to in-state rival Central Michigan, 82-75 on Friday night.

Western Michigan ends the regular season and will set its sights on its First Round match-up in the Mid-American Conference Tournament against CMU on Monday, March 11 in Mount Pleasant. It will be the third time the two in-state rivals have met this season with tip-off on Monday set for 7:00 p.m.

Despite the loss, Seth Dugan registered his 15th double-double of the year with a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds. With 15 double-doubles the Otsego, Mich., native now sits in sole possession of second for most double-doubles in a single-season, passing Shayne Whittington's mark of 14 back in 2013-14.

The senior center is one double-double shy of tying the single-season record set by Booker James (16) during the 1986-87 campaign. Of his 15 double-doubles, 10 have come in MAC play, breaking the school record set by Whittington in 2013-14.

In 38 minutes played, Dugan was a staggering 11-of-15 from the field to go along with three assists, three blocks and one steal. With one guaranteed game remaining, Dugan is 29 points away from eclipsing 1,000 career points.

Fellow senior Josh Davis shined on senior night as well with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Davis also had two rebounds, two assists and one steal in 27 minutes. It's the second straight game the Detroit, Mich., native has scored in double figures and 18th this season.

Sophomore Michael Flowers scored in double figures for the third straight game with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Freshman Patrick Emilien recorded nine points with three three-pointers, marking the most points Emilien has scored in a game since Feb. 26 at Northern Illinois.

Off the bench the Brown & Gold got a strong contribution from sophomore Kawanise Wilkins with eight points, four rebounds and five assists.

The Broncos outrebounded the Chippewas, 37-34 and held a 7-5 advantage on the offensive glass. WMU had just 13 turnovers on the night but CMU took advantage scoring 18 points off of turnovers. As a team WMU shot 47.6 percent from the field while going 6-of-24 from beyond the three-point line.

WMU ends the regular season with an overall record of 8-23, 2-16 in conference play.

The senior duo of Davis and Dugan got off to a fast start in the first half scoring nine of the first 12 points as WMU held a slim 12-10 lead at the 15:31 mark. However, the Bronco offense stalled over the next seven minutes of play going just 2-of-11 from the field as CMU gained an 18-16 advantage with 8:30 remaining.

At the 8:30 mark of the first half play was stopped for nearly 45 minutes as both teams were sent to the locker room as a referee needed medical attention on the court. When play resumed the CMU offense caught fire embarking on an 8-0 run in a little over a minute to grab a 24-16 lead.

CMU widened its leads to double digits after back-to-back three's by David DiLeo and ultimately went on a 20-4 run to lead 34-20 with two minutes to go in the first half. The Chippewas ended the half strong making five of their final seven field goals to take a 41-26 lead into halftime.

To begin the second half, CMU made five of its first seven shots and propelled its lead to 67-49 at the halfway point. With just under seven minutes to play the Broncos began their march towards a comeback, sinking four straight field goals to trail 71-58 at the 6:34 mark.

A three-pointer by Emilien cut WMU's deficit down to single digits with three minutes to go, highlighting a 12-1 run by WMU. The Broncos used a 14-1 run during a four-minute stretch to cut its deficit down to four at 72-68 with 2:30 to play.

Out of a media timeout the Chippewas countered the Bronco run with four straight points to widen their lead back to 74-68. With 26.5 remaining, Michael Flowers nailed a three-pointer from the right wing to cut the deficit down to five before CMU made its final four free-throws to secure the victory.

Central Michigan improved its overall record to 21-10, 10-8 in MAC play and clinched the No. 5 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Chippewas had three score in double figures led by David DiLeo with 24 points.
