CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Western Michigan track and field team claimed two event titles on the first day of the Eastern Illinois University Big Blue Classic on Friday evening.
Both wins came in field events during the afternoon session. Sophomore Abean Atuobi took the top spot in the shot put after throwing a season's-best distance of 49' 0.25" (14.94m). Freshman Madison Ochs took fourth at 41' 025" (12.50m) and sophomore Audrey Pickering finished in seventh place with a distance of 40' 6" (12.34m).
WMU's other win came in the long jump, where the team took the top three spots. Junior Erica Sheahan won the event with a season's-best distance of 18' 7" (5,66m) and was followed by sophomore Diamond Mitchell at 18' 2.25" (5.54m), Senior Allison Hufnagel had a big personal-best performance to take third place at 17' 11.50" (5.47m). Hufnagel also took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.33.
The Broncos also had a strong showing in the hammer throw. Sophomores Taylor Eaton and Aniya Davis took fourth and fifth, while freshman Wynn Stitt finished in sixth place. All three finished with personal-best distances, led by Eaton's 157' 8" (48.07m). Davis finished just two inches behind her, while Stitt threw a distance of 154' 6" (47.09m).
