Broncos Travel Back to Ohio Seeking Series Split with Akron

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team is set to follow up its mid-week matchup at Kent State traveling back to Ohio to face the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the Broncos seeking a series split.

LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan nearly completed a 19-point comeback at Kent State University Wednesday, Feb. 6, but fell short 55-51. Down 38-22 at the half, WMU had a strong second half and put together an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to come within two points of the Golden Flashes at 48-46. KSU held on down the stretch, however. Kamrin Reed led the Broncos with a career-high 20 points, tying several career-highs with a 7-of-12 shooting performance from the field, including four three-pointers and four steals while playing in all 40 minutes. 

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's contest will mark the 42nd all-time matchup between Western Michigan and Akron, with the Broncos owning a 31-10 series advantage. The two teams recently met inside University Arena on Jan. 9, 2019, with the Zips downing WMU 72-59. The Brown & Gold struggled with the absence of starters Deja Wimby and Leighah-Amori Wool, while Logan McCane led WMU with a career-high 11-point performance.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
After snapping a four-game losing streak in the MAC with a 14-point comeback victory at Ball State (Jan. 26), the Broncos have dropped two-straight against Miami and Kent State to fall to 8-11 overall and 2-6 during conference play. WMU is led by seniors Deja Wimby and Jasmyn Walker. Wimby leads the team with 13.2 points per game and ranks third in the MAC and 23rd in the nation with 2.9 steals per game. Walker ranks eighth in the MAC with 6.9 rebounds per game. 

SCOUTING THE ZIPS
Since snapping a three-game losing streak in the MAC with a 70-64 overtime victory over Toledo on Jan. 26, the Zips have dropped its last two contests, most recently a 92-70 setback against the conference leaders from Ohio University. Akron ranks fourth in the MAC in three-point field goal percentage (0.346) and three-point field goals made (8.4 per game), led by Megan Sefcik. The redshirt senior guard leads the team with 17.1 points per game (5th/MAC) and ranks fourth in the conference with an average of 3.3 three-pointers a game. 

BALL SECURITY
The Brown & Gold have turned the ball over 250 times through 19 games in 2018-19, which ranks as the ninth fewest in the NCAA and the best in the MAC. Western Michigan's 13.2 turnovers per game also ranks as No. 1 in the MAC and ranks 21st in the nation.   

MILLER FROM THE ARC
Stepping into a starting role this season, senior Meredith Miller is one of three Broncos to have started in all 19 games this year and leads the team with 39 three-point field goals made (11th/MAC). Miller tallied a career-high seven three-pointers at Ball State (Jan. 26), which ranked tied for third most in a game in Western Michigan history and is the eighth Bronco all-time to tally at least seven three-pointers in a game. She ranks 15th all-time at WMU with 84 career three-point field goals. 

WIMBY CLIMBS RECORD BOOK
Senior point guard Deja Wimby continues to move up in the Bronco women's basketball record book. She notched at least four assists for the fourth-straight game at Kent State and ranks fifth all-time at WMU with 436 career assists. With a pair of steals at Kent State, Wimby moved into seventh program history with 209 career steals. In addition, she is 25 points away from joining the 1,000-point club with 975 points in Brown & Gold. 

WALKER JOINS 1K CLUB
Jasmyn Walker scored 13 points versus Toledo (Jan. 13) to surpass 1,000 points in her career. After totaling 679 points in two seasons at Valparaiso University, Walker has now accumulated 353 points in 38 games played in Brown & Gold. 

WALKER SELECTED TO WBCA COACHES PROGRAM
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced the class for the 17th annual "So You Want To Be A Coach" program on Jan. 22, with redshirt senior Jasmyn Walker included. Each member will participate in the three-day workshop with speakers provided by WeCOACH on April 3-5 in conjunction with the WBCA Convention in Tampa Bay, Fla. Walker, a business administration major, is one of 60 student-athletes throughout NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, invited to participate in the program. She will follow in the footsteps of former Broncos Breanna Bankston and Carrie Moore, who both went on to become Division I coaches.

LAST YEAR IN THE MAC
Last season, the Broncos 9-9 overall during Mid-American Conference, finishing third in the MAC West standings, the best finish since the 2014-15 season. WMU received the No. 6 seed in the MAC Tournament and upset No. 3 seeded Ball State prior to falling to No. 2 Buffalo in the semifinals.
 
CLIPFELL THIRD IN ALL-TIME IN WINS AT WMU
Head Coach Shane Clipfell, who eclipsed the 100-win mark versus Eastern Kentucky (Nov. 28), moved into third place in all-time coaching wins at Western Michigan during the victory over Bowling Green (Jan. 5). His 105th career win in his seventh season at the helm passed Jim Hess' (1982-90) career win total.
