SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Western Michigan senior Sarah Anderson shattered a 34-year old program record in the mile run to highlight the track & field team's final day of competition at the prestigious Meyo Invitational on Saturday.
Anderson was played in the fastest heat of the race and finished with a time of 4:46.65, breaking Maggie Lillie-Smith's record of 4:49.20 that had stood since 1985.
"Sarah got put into the fast face and really went with the flow," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "She ran a great split in the mile in the distance medley relay on Friday and I think she knew she was ready to run fast. She did a nice job of working her way up and keeping things going in the race."
"She broke one of the longest-standing records in our record book. Sarah is showing she has great range and can run in a 400 all the way up to a 5k."
Anderson also combined with Taneidra Cain, Alex Bryant and Madison Meredith to take seventh in the 4x400-meter relay, running a time of 3:48.55.
Sophomore thrower Abena Atuobi continued her strong indoor season after taking sixth in the shot put, throwing a distance of 47' 5" (14.45m).
Western Michigan splits up next weekend, heading to the Grand Valley State Invitational and the Iowa State Invitational.
