Women's Basketball Downed by Rivals from Central Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped a Mid-American Conference home matchup versus its in-state rival Central Michigan University on Wednesday evening at University Arena, falling by a score of 87-53.

The Broncos 87 points against stand as a season-high, as they struggled to contain CMU's Reyna Frost, who tallied a career-high 33 points along with 20 rebounds while shooting 14-of-18 from the field.

The Chippewas, ranked No. 8 in College Insider's Mid-Major Top 25 poll, forced 18 WMU turnovers and held a 44-31 advantage in rebounds. The turnovers were costly as the Chips totaled 19 points off Bronco giveaways and led in points in the paint, 48-24.

The visitors shot 55.6 percent from the field (35-of-63), compared to a 33.9 percent (20-of-59) mark for Western Michigan. The Broncos converted their least amount of three-pointers in five games with six three-point field goals.

WMU was unable to claim a lead throughout, as the Chippewas closed out the first quarter on an 8-0 run to gain a 15-point advantage after 10 minutes played. The Broncos trimmed the CMU lead to 12 with a Leighah-Amori Wool layup while outscoring the Chips 12-9 near the midway point of the second frame. CMU held the home team to just six points for the remainder of the half, however, taking a 52-33 into the break. Central Michigan set the tone early into the third quarter and didn't look back, increasing its lead to 30 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Brown & Gold had three starters score in double figures, with senior Jasmyn Walker leading the way with 15 points off 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Wool followed with 12 points along Kamrin Reed adding 10. Meredith Miller tallied a season-high and team-high eight rebounds.
