HONOLULU – The Western Michigan men's basketball team will spend the holidays during the 2020-21 season in Hawaii as the Broncos are set to compete in the 2020 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, Dec. 22-25.
It will be the second time the Broncos have competed at the Diamond Head Classic, doing so in the inaugural event back in 2009. The field for the 12
th annual event includes host school Hawaii, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Saint Mary's, San Diego State, Seattle and Temple. All games will be held at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Five teams in the 2020 field were a part of postseason play last season as Arizona State, Oklahoma, Saint Mary's and Temple all made the NCAA Tournament while Seattle participated in the College Insider Tournament (CIT).
Back in 2009 the Broncos went 2-1 at the Diamond Head Classic with victories over Northeastern and College of Charleston. WMU fell to eventual champion USC by five in the opening round of the tournament.
The 2020 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is an eight-team tournament that will feature 12 games in three days. Each team will compete in one game per day with the two teams that remain undefeated facing off in the championship game on Christmas.
Previous tournament champions include USC (2009, 2017), Butler (2010), Kansas State (2011), Arizona (2012), Iowa State (2013), George Washington (2014), Oklahoma (2015), San Diego State (2016) and TCU (2018).
