DEKALB, Ill. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 win at Northern Illinois on Thursday afternoon. The Broncos secured third place in the regular season standings and will host Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
WMU (8-9-1, 6-4-1 MAC) picked up goals from Suzuna Shibukawa and Bailey Korhorn. The Broncos outshot the Huskies 22-5 overall and allowed just two shots on goal by NIU.
"Overall, the team did a great job controlling the game," said interim head coach Sammy Boateng. "We created a lot of chances in the first half and hit the cross bar twice. It was good to end the regular season with a victory as we prepare for Ohio on Sunday."
Shibukawa's first collegiate goal gave Western Michigan a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Korhorn was out wide and crossed it to Shibukawa at the far post, who one-touched it into the net.
WMU carried its lead into the second half and added to it in the 69th minute Korhorn's goal. Senior forward Grace Labadie took a corner kick and placed it at the top of the six-yard box for Korhorn to head into the net for her sixth goal of the season.
Northern Illinois cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 81st minute. After a Bronco foul near midfield Jennie Nailor served a free kick into the box and it was headed in by Emma Cramblett.
WMU gears up for the MAC Quarterfinals on Sunday. WMU and OU previously met on Sept. 29, with the Broncos winning 1-0. Admission is free.
