Broncos Pick Up Crucial Win Over Toledo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team maintained its position in the top four of the Mid-American Conference after a 1-0 win over Toledo at the WMU Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Morgan Otteson netted her MAC-leading 10th goal of the season, while junior goalie Maggie Rodgers made three saves to record WMU's fifth shutout of the season. The Broncos (7-8-1, 5-3-1 MAC) controlled the midfield with Bailey Korhorn, Lydia Bajema and Jorden Campbell. Campbell played the full 90 minutes in her second collegiate start.

Western Michigan outshot Toledo 12-7 overall, with a 6-3 edge in shots on goal

"I thought from our goalkeeper and our back line, they did a tremendous job and our midfield did a great job to win that area," said interim head coach Sammy Boateng.  "They are a good team and we needed to make sure that we were sound defensively and being able to be composed."

The Broncos used three subs on the day with Suzuna Shibukawa and Hannah Redoute each playing at least 30 minutes.

"For us, it's a reward system," added Boateng. "At the end of the day when you train hard and you do a good job on a consistent basis you are going to get opportunities in the game. The subs did a good job today."

WMU outshot Toledo 7-2 in the first half but finally broke through in the 54th minute. Hannah Kahn beat a defender in the right side of the box, drawing out Toledo's goalkeeper. She passed it to Otteson in the middle of the box for the finish for her second assist of the season."

From there the Bronco midfield and defense smothered out many of the chances by the Rockets with clearances or forcing long shots.

Western Michigan wraps up its home schedule on Sunday, hosting MAC leaders Bowling Green at 1 p.m. The Broncos will take time prior to the start to celebrate their nine-member senior class.
