KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 14th –ranked Western Michigan hockey team dropped its second straight game to Bowling Green, falling 2-1 in overtime at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
BGSU's Cameron Wright took advantage of a loose puck and fired a shot into the net from the left circle just 11 seconds into the overtime period to win it for the Falcons.
WMU's lone goal on the night came from
Dawson DiPietro, while freshman goalie
Brandon Bussi made 21 saves on the night. Western Michigan outshot Bowling Green 38-23, but was held scoreless during six power plays.
The Broncos (1-2-1) had chances early, including 1:19 of a 5-on-3 power play, but didn't break through until the 1:01 mark of the second period when DiPietro gave them the lead.
Paul Washe forced a turnover behind the net, with
Drew Worrad chasing down the puck. Worrad sent it back to Washe behind the net and he found DiPietro in front of the net to bang it in. The goal was DiPietro's first of the season, while Washe picked up his second assist and Worrad his first of the season.
Bowling Green tied it up at 1-1 at 9:59 in the second period. A Bronco tried to clear the puck out of the slot but it bounced right to senior defenseman Alec Rauhauser and he ripped a shot through traffic and into the net for his second goal of the season.
Both teams had limited chances in the third period, with Broncos holding the Falcons to just four shots on goal while getting seven chances themselves.
