Women's Soccer Earns Big Road Win at Akron, 2-1

AKRON, Ohio -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team picked up its third road in win in Mid-American Conference play, taking down Akron 2-1 at FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday night.

All three goals in the game came in the second half, with WMU (6-7-1, 4-2-1 MAC) picking up tallies from Bailey Korhorn and Morgan Otteson. The Broncos held the zips to just three shots on goal, despite being outshot 16-9 overall. Maggie Rogers made two saves in the victory.

"Today was a good result for our team," said interim head coach Sammy Boateng. "WE defended well as a group. Our outside backs Kai (Sugiyama) and Emily (Dahl) were phenomenal and our center backs covered and cleaned up well. I'm so proud of the group and now we have to prepare for a very tough Buffalo team."

After a scoreless first half Akron took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick goal by Ashley Amato in the 63rd minute.

WMU responded five minutes later on a blast from Korhorn. Grace Labadie found Korhorn at the top of the box and she fired a rocket in to the upper 90 for her fifth goal of the year, tying it up at 1-1 in the 68th.

Otteson's MAC-leading eighth of the season pushed the Broncos ahead at 73:00. The goal started with excellent combination play between Labadie and freshman Suzuna Shibukawa. Shibukawa found Otteson just 10 yards from goal and the sophomore forward buried it for the game-winner. The assist was Shibukawa's first career point.

WMU fought off the Zips for the remaining 17 minutes to secure the win.

The Broncos head to Buffalo to take on the Bulls on Sunday at 1 p.m.
