OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team picked up its third Mid-American Conference win of the season, blanking Miami on the road, 2-0, on Friday.
Morgan Otteson netted her seventh goal of the season and the RedHawks scored an own goal, while Maggie Rogers made three saves for the shutout.
"This was a very good team victory today," said head coach Sammy Boateng. "Our back line and Maggie job defending and tracking a dynamic Miami attacking unit. We played very well as a unit in our attacking third with good combination play and good movement off the ball. Miami is very good team and we did a fantastic job of finishing our opportunities and getting the shutout."
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie after a lively first half, which featured a combined 16 shots. Otteson scored in the 72nd minute, slotting a shot into the left corner after getting a pass from Bailey Korhorn to put WMU up 1-0. Just over a minute later Kai Sugiyama fired a shot from distance that was heading wide but then deflected in by a Miami defender to push the lead to 2-0.
Western Michigan's defense clamped down in the final minutes and allowed just three total shots in the second half.
Overall, WMU outshot MU 17-9 and had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Korhorn led all players with a team and game-high nine shots, landing four on frame.
The Broncos (5-6-1, 3-1-1 MAC) return home to host Ball State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
