KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team heads to the University of Notre Dame for the 32nd annual Meyo Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center on Friday and Saturday.

The Broncos will be one of 38 teams to compete at the prestigious meet. WMU competes in the finals of the long jump, weight throw, high jump, 5,000-meter run, distance medley relay and 600-meter run on Friday. Also filling out Friday's schedule is qualification in the 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Saturday provides a full slate of action.

"We always look forward to this meet," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "The Meyo Invitational means we've reached February and that's a great thing. The whole month of January feels like we have to dig ourselves out of our hole from the Christmas break and things tend to improve faster in February. We will have some great competition in a great facility this weekend."

January wasn't all that bad for the Broncos, who have turned in several good performances early on in the season.

"The last two weekends at Indiana and Minnesota have traditionally not gone very well for us," added Lycan. "But this season, both weekends, we made it through and got some really good performances across the board. I feel like we're doing pretty well so far this season and we've had a good week of practice despite all the weather issues."

One of the Broncos is off to a good start is junior Juliane Sormain. The middle-distance specialist is coming off the best cross country season of her career after finishing 14th and earning All-Mid-American honors in the fall. Sormain has already ran a personal-best time in the mile after taking second at the Gladstein Invitational, running 5:01.87 and shaving nearlying 10 seconds off of her previous personal best. Sormain will be running in the mile on Saturday, looking to break the 5-minute barrier for the first time in her career.

"I think she's really doing well this year," said Lycan. "She was good last year and is coming off an outstanding cross country season. I'm excited to see her run the mile."

The Broncos split up next weekend heading to the Iowa State Invitational and the Grand Valley State Invitational.
