KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 13th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team completed the sweep of No. 4/3 Denver after another dominant performance in a 5-1 win in front of a sellout crowd at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Five different Broncos netted goals, while
Trevor Gorsuch made 19 of his 36 saves in the third period to earn his 13th win of the season. WMU's power play continued its hot streak, going 2-for-5 on the night while the penalty kill finished 7-for-8.
Josh Passolt gave the Broncos (15-8-1, 8-5-1-1 NCHC) an early 1-0 lead on a power play goal at 5:59 in the first period. WMU was cycling with the man advantage when
Hugh McGing found an open Passolt in the slot for the one-timer.
Ethen Frank also picked up an assist on the goal.
Paul Washe pushed the lead to 2-0 just 40 seconds later on his second goal of the season.
Cam Lee dished it off to Washe in the slot and the sophomore forward punched it in. Lee picked up his 14th assist on the season, while
Jade McMullen also picked up a helper.
Freshman forward
Drew Worrad tallied on the power play to give Western Michigan a 3-0 lead at 14:52 in the first period.
Colt Conrad ripped a shot on net and the rebound bounced to
Dawson DiPietro just left of the crease. DiPietro passed it across the crease to Worrad for the tap-in goal, his third of the season. DiPietro picked up his seventh assist of the year, while Conrad tallied his team-leading 16th.
The Broncos added two more goals in quick succession in the second period. Lee and
Austin Rueschhoff played the give-and-go on a rush with Rueshhoff finding Lee open at the back door for lee's sixth goal of the season. Rueschhoff continued to add to his career-best assist total with his 12th.
Thirty second later DiPetro had a shot by Conrad deflect off him and end up in the net for his third goal of the season, pushing the lead to 5-0. Conrad picked up his 17th helper, while
Cole Gallant also earned an assist, his sixth of the season.
Emilio Pettersen added a power play goal for the Pioneers to disrupt the shutout bid at 4:24 in the third period.
Western Michigan heads back on the road in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play, traveling to Omaha on Friday and Saturday. Both games are slated for 8:07 p.m. and can be seen live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network. WMU returns home to host North Dakota on Feb. 15-16.
