KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team bounced back from a tough loss at Notre Dame, winning 6-1 over DePaul University on Sunday, Jan. 20 inside West Hills Athletic Club.

The victory marks the first over DePaul in over a decade and snaps a six-game losing skid in the all-time series, with the last Bronco victory over the Blue Demons dating back to Feb. 16, 2007 in Chicago, Ill.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group," said head coach Ryan Tomlinson. "We really bounced back from the loss on Friday and played with great energy. It was a total team effort today. Our three seniors did a great job of leading the way and clinching the match for us. Our young players are starting to play with great energy as well."

The match got off to a nail-biting start with the doubles point as Azcui/Jack took their match 6-4. Fevralev/Tiraspolsky would drop their match to Clousing/Antonijevic 7-5, but Lyubomirova and Tjon-A-Joe would seal the deal in a tie-breaker taking their match 7-6(2).

In singles play, senior Denise Azcui continued her hot play at home this season, taking her match, 6-4, 6-3. Fellow senior Melina Lyubomirova picked up her first win of the season at the No. 1 spot, defeating Keisha Clousing, 6-3, 7-6. The senior trio was rounded out by Katja Fevralev winning 6-0, 6-1. The rookie duo of Femke Tjon-A-Joe and Kristina Tiraspolosky would stay undefeated at home as well for the Broncos, with three set wins at the three and five positions.

Next Up
The Brown & Gold, now 2-1 overall, will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 26, as they host a doubleheader with IUPUI and Chicago State. The first match will start with doubles at 11 a.m. with the Chicago State match to follow at 5 p.m. from West Hills Athletic Club.
