VALPARAISO, Ind. - The No. 14-ranked Western Michigan men's soccer team concluded preseason action Thursday, Aug. 16 with a 3-0 exhibition victory at Valparaiso, finishing the preseason with a 1-0-1 record. The Broncos played to a 1-1 tie at Michigan State three days earlier on Aug. 13 in East Lansing.
Paul Liagre,
Kosti Moni, and
Anthony Bowie picked up the Bronco goals while
Elijah Michaels,
Eric Cotton, and
Isaac Walker combined for the shutout in goal.
"We scored a few goals which is nice to see in the preseason," said head coach
Chad Wiseman. "We created some good looks throughout most of the first half. Defensively we were solid and did a decent job slowing down some of their creative attacking players."
Western Michigan's first goal, the eventual game-winner, was headed in by Liagre off of a
Tommy Clark corner kick. Moni scored the second on a penalty kick, and the third was a result of a strong strike from the top of the box by Bowie.
"We have to really be more accountable man for man throughout the course of the game, I think that's part of preseason though," Wiseman commented. "We have the better part of a week to get better and prepare for Loyola and our season opener. It should be an exciting opening game."
The Broncos now shift their focus towards an 18-game regular season schedule, beginning with a home matchup versus Loyola Chicago, Friday, Aug. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at WMU Soccer Complex. All home WMU soccer games are free admission.
