ST. LOUIS -- The Western Michigan University men's soccer team earned another weekly honor on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior forward
Sahel Yessen was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week by conference office staff on Tuesday following a massive performance against St. Thomas. A Preseason All-MVC selection, this is Yessen's first weekly honor from the MVC.Â
A week ago, Yessen joined an elite club of Broncos in the team's 4-0 shutout of St. Thomas. He became just the third WMU player to record a hat trick this decade and one of only eight players since 2000 to achieve the milestone. His first goal of the match came quickly at just two minutes into the game on a penalty kick, the third such opportunity in as many games for the Brown and Gold.

Yessen added his second goal early in the second half as well, scoring in the 59th minute with a strike just inside the 18. His final goal of the night came only five minutes later after a deep offensive throw-in was crossed to Yessen in the top left corner of the penalty box. The junior is now second on the team in goals (3) and points (9), after his performance over St. Thomas. He also leads Western Michigan in assists on the year with three over 13 matches.
On Sunday night in the Broncos tight 1-0 loss to the Evansville Purple Aces, Yessen recorded one shot early that just missed the net by hitting the crossbar of the goal. He also took a few of WMU's five corner kicks in the match, mostly from the right side of the pitch.Â
Yessen's Offensive Player of the Week honor is the third of the season for the Brown and Gold. Two weeks ago junior midfielderÂ
Jordan Klein and redshirt senior
Alex Lindewirth were named the MVC's Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week. Western Michigan is back in action in under five hours tonight to wrap up a four game homestand. The Broncos welcome Holy Cross College of Indiana to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. kickoff this evening.
