CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced on Monday morning the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the eight spring sports during the 2017-18 academic season as junior Denise Azcui represented the Broncos for her second straight year.

The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a four-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the spring sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students, junior college and graduate school transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.

Azcui, who was recently named the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Midwest Regional Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, finished her junior campaign at 19-11 singles record with an impressive 6-2 stint during Mid-American Conference play. The co-captain concluded the season winning eight of her last 10 matches and went 5-5 in doubles play at No. 5 during the season and was named the team's Amy Yeast Co-MVP.

The junior holds a 3.93 cumulative GPA in Industrial & Entrepreneurial Engineering and has minors in Management and Mathematics. On Feb. 20 she was given the Robert E. Boughner Engineering Student-Athlete Award and was recently tabbed to the Academic All-MAC team for the second straight year. Azcui is a member of the Alphi Pit Mu and the Tau Beta Pi and serves as the President of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee for WMU.

Azcui was one of 13 MAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes from WMU in the spring sports.
