TRENTON, New York – Former Western Michigan baseball LHP
Keegan Akin has been named to the 2018 Eastern League All-Star roster announced by the Easter League of Professional Baseball on Tuesday.
Akin in 2016 was the Broncos third highest draft pick in school history and highest since 1970, going in the second round (54
th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles.
Akin is currently with the Double-A Bowie Baysox and leads the team in wins (8), ERA (2.63), strikeouts (92), opponent's average (.199) and innings pitched (85.2). Within the Eastern League, Akin is in the top five in each of the categories above including the top spot in strikeouts and second in ERA.
It's Akin's first season with the Double-A club and is ranked the ninth best prospect within the Baltimore Orioles organization. Akrin has thrown 10 quality starts in his first 15 games on the mound and has struck out at least nine batter three times.
The left-handed pitcher had an illustrious career at WMU, setting the single season strikeout record with 133 in 2016 en route to guiding the Broncos to their first Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship. In 2016, Akin was named a Third Team All-American by
Baseball America and earned ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-Midwest Region team honors.
In 2016, Akin finished with an overall record of 7-4 with a 1.82 ERA in 109.0 innings of work. Akin earned First Team All-MAC honors and was named the MAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player.
The 2018 Eastern League All-Star game will take place on Wednesday, July 11 at Arm & Hammer Park, hosted by the Trenton Thunder. Akin will play alongside notable minor league prospects such as Vladmir Guerrero Jr., Beau Burrows and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.
