Broncos Claim Fourth Straight Series with 12-5 win over EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Western Michigan baseball secured a fourth straight Mid-American Conference series victory on Sunday with a 12-5 defeat of Eastern Michigan inside Oestrike Stadium.

For the third time this season the Bronco offense exploded for double digit runs scoring 12 on 14 hits. It's the 11th time in 2018 that WMU has registered double digit hits. The offense was guided by home runs from junior Jesse Forestell and sophomore Ethan Hajdukovic. It was the second game this season in which the Brown & Gold have had two home runs.

Forestell had a wonderful performance at the plate on Sunday, matching a career-high with five RBIs, going 3-for-5 and a run scored. The Chicago, Ill., native's home run in the top of the fifth was the second of his career. On the year, Forestell has recorded eight multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games.

Sophomore Ethan Hajdukovic joined the home run club, rocketing his first career home run over the right field wall in the top of the fourth. Hajdukovic went 1-for-4 at the plate with a career-high four RBIs and two runs scored.

Joining the RBI parade on Sunday was redshirt junior Andrew Stone who went 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. On the weekend, Stone had a staggering .667 batting average with 10 hits, one double and three RBIs.

Seven of the nine players in the starting line-up recorded a hit for the Broncos while the one through four hitters combined to go 10-for-20 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. It was an equally stellar performance on the mound for senior LHP Jacob Piechota who went 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits to earn his third victory of the season.

With its fourth straight MAC series victory, Western Michigan improves its overall record to 18-18 and 8-8 in conference play. It's the first time since 2016 WMU has won four straight MAC series.

The Broncos prepare for two games against Power Five opponents in midweek action beginning on Tuesday, May 1 at Notre Dame. WMU then returns home the following day to host Northwestern before taking on Miami in a three-game series at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.

WMU took an early lead in the top of the second after loading the bases with one out. Junior Conner Henderson lifted a fly ball to right field deep enough to score freshman Blake Dunn from third and give the Brown & Gold an early 1-0 lead.

Eastern Michigan responded quickly in the bottom of the second, tying the game after a sacrifice bunt was executed perfectly to score the runner from third.

The Broncos once again broke the tie in the top of the fourth thanks in large part to a three-run home run over the right field wall by Hajdukovic. It was Hajdukovic's first career home run and gave WMU a commanding 4-1 lead.

WMU added to its lead in the top of the fifth off the bat of Jesse Forestell who rocketed a two-run home run to right field to give WMU a 6-1 lead It was Forestell's first home run of the season and second of his career.

Leading 6-1 heading into the top of the seventh, the Broncos scored one run on three hits to increase their lead. With two outs and runners on first and third, Forestell delivered on a 2-0 count with an RBI single up the middle to give WMU a 7-1 advantage.

EMU clawed its way back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits highlighted by back-to-back extra-base hits with one out.

After a four run inning by the Eagles, the Bronco offense responded with five runs on four hits in the top of the eighth as the WMU offense batted around. With the bases loaded and one out, Connor Smith roped a two RBI double down the left field line to extend the Bronco lead to 10-5.

One batter later, Forestell earned his fourth and fifth RBIs of the afternoon with a two-RBI single with two outs to extend the Bronco lead to 12-5. Over the final six innings the Brown & Gold scored 11 of its 12 runs.

Redshirt senior RHP Jimmy Townsend-Chase retired six of the final eight batters to secure WMU's fourth straight series victory with a 12-5 win over the Eagles.
