WMU Falls On the Road to Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  – In Tuesday midweek action, Western Michigan baseball rattled off double digit hits for the second straight game as the Broncos fell to Notre Dame, 14-4 inside Frank Eck Stadium.

The Brown & Gold scored four runs on 11 hits against the Fighting Irish, marking the 13th time this season WMU has recorded double digit hits. Five of the 11 hits for the Broncos went for extra-bases while 10 different Broncos recorded a hit on Tuesday night.

Freshman Blake Dunn continued his stellar play at the plate going 2-for-4 to earn his seventh multi-hit game of the season.  Reigning Mid-American Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week Andrew Stone went 1-for-2 with an RBI to improve his batting average to .314 on the year.

Sophomore Drew Devine and redshirt freshman Logan Hudson each recorded their first career triples against Notre Dame while the junior trio of Connor Smith, Nate Grys and Cooper Marshall each had a double.

The Broncos got on the board in the top of the fourth with one run on two hits. With two outs, Grys blasted a double to give WMU a runner in scoring position. Five pitches later, Marshall roped a double to left center field, scoring Grys from second to give WMU its first run of the ballgame.

WMU made a late rally in the top of the ninth with three runs on three hits to cut into the Fighting Irish lead. To lead off the inning, Hudson blasted a triple to center field on a 2-1 count before senior Evan Nelson scored Hudson two pitches later on an RBI single.

In the top of the ninth with runners on second and third with one out, sophomore Ethan Hajdukovic hit into a sacrifice fly to right field to score Nelson from third. Two pitches later
Stone laced a single to center field to earn his 10th RBI of the season, scoring freshman Connor Charping from second. Stone's RBI scored WMU's third run in the top of the ninth and fourth of the game.

Despite the late-inning rally, the Broncos were unable to overcome 14 runs on 13 hits from the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame scored in six of the nine innings while hitting three home runs through the first six batters and four home runs overall.

It's a quick turnaround for the Broncos as they host Big Ten Conference opponent Northwestern on Wednesday, May 2 inside Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m. WMU now has an overall record of 18-19 and is 8-8 in conference play.
