PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – For the second time this season a game ended in the tenth inning off the bat of junior
Nate Grys as he delivered an RBI single through the left side to lead Western Michigan baseball to a 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure and a sweep of the Bonnies on Sunday afternoon.
The tenth inning started with a
Conner Henderson bunt down the third base line followed by a throwing error to put Henderson on second with no outs. Henderson advanced to third after a perfect sacrifice bunt by junior
Connor Smith.
A walk to junior
Jesse Forestell put runners on the corners for Grys who delivered with a one out single to the left side, bringing home Henderson. Grys now has two walk-off hits this year, the previous being a walk off homerun against Miami (OH) in the bottom of the tenth inning at the Campbell Invitational on Feb. 23.
Grys was stellar at the plate over the weekend against the Bonnie hitting .538 with four doubles, six RBI's and three runs scored while recording a .846 slugging percentage. For the season the Madison Heights, Mich., native is hitting .429 with 12 RBI's and six doubles.
Defense and pitching played a huge part in the extra innings affair on Sunday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Broncos tossed 10 scoreless innings with three different pitchers while not committing an error on the afternoon. WMU held St. Bonaventure to a season-low two hits on Sunday.
The Broncos got a strong quality start from senior LHP
Jacob Piechota who threw five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high seven batters. Fellow LHP
Brandon Petersen came in relief for the Broncos, tossing four innings of scoreless baseball allowing one hit and striking out two Bonnies.
Andrew Reisinger was called on to pitch in the tenth inning and threw a perfect inning and struck out one batter. Reisinger earned the victory and moved to 2-0 on the season.
On Sunday the Brown & Gold tallied 11 hits, marking the fourth consecutive game registering double digit hits. Western Michigan has now won four straight and five of the last six games.
The Broncos heads to Lakeland, Fla on Monday, March 5 to play the Detroit Tigers Prospects Team at newly renovated Joker Marchant Stadium. It's the seventh straight year the Broncos and Tigers will take the field together.
In the seventh, eighth and ninth innings the Broncos stranded a total of seven runners on base. WMU loaded the bases in the ninth inning but was unable to get a run across home plate. Grys' heroics in the bottom of the tenth improved WMU's overall
record to 5-4 and 3-0 while in Florida.
