PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Western Michigan Baseball team extended its winning streak to five games on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-0 win against Villanova at the Snow Bird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Broncos struck out 16 while not committing an error for the third game in a row.
The 16 K's for the Bronco pitching staff was the most in a game against a Division I opponent since May 6, 2016 when the Broncos struck out 16 against Miami. Junior RHP
Chris Modrzynski got the start for the Broncos and threw 3.2 innings allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high seven.
Senior
Andrew Reisinger came in to pitch in relief and picked up the win out of the bullpen. Reisinger on the day threw two innings, striking out four Villanova batters and allowing just one hit. The senior moves to 3-0 on the season.
Junior
Matt McConnell relieved Reisinger and struck out three in 2.1 innings of work. Fifth-year senior
Jimmy Townsend-Chase headed to the mound in the ninth and slammed the door shut on the Wildcats sending them down in order with two strikeouts. Townsend-Chase has now stuck out 11 batters in his last 6.1 innings.
The Broncos pitching staff extend their scoreless streak to 22 innings after back-to-back shutout victories. WMU has won five straight contests, marking the longest winning streak for WMU since winning five straight back in March of 2016.
WMU continues play at the Snowbird Classic on Wednesday, March 7 against Georgetown at 12:00 p.m. It will be the first of two games in three days against the Hoyas for the Broncos.
The Brown & Gold scored six runs on five hits against Villanova with junior
Jimmy Roche leading the way going 2-for-4 with a clutch two-out RBI single in the fourth inning. Juniors
Conner Henderson and
Connor Smith also chipped in with a double each.
The Broncos got on the board in the first inning without registering a hit. Henderson got things going with a hit by a pitch to lead off the game. The speedy junior stole second base on the next pitch and then rounded third and crossed home plate after the ball rolled to the back stop on a wild pitch.
WMU added to their lead in the fourth inning as junior
Nate Grys worked a two-out walk to give the Broncos a runner on the base paths. Grys stole second two pitches later before Roche drove him home with an RBI single to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
The Broncos added two more runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead over Villanova to 4-0. After a 10 pitch at bat, freshman
Sean O'Keefe drew a walk before senior Beau Filkings smashed a single into left field to give WMU runners on first and second with no outs.
O'Keefe and Filkins were moved over to second and third after a balk before senior
Andrew Stone delivered with a fielder's choice to score O'Keefe and extend the Bronco lead. Filkins crossed home plate the next at-bat after a wild pitch.
WMU scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 6-0 victory over Villanova. Â
