KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell to No. 9/11 Minnesota-Duluth, 8-0, on Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena.
UMD's Karson Kuhlman recorded a hat trick, Jared Thomas tallied four assists and sophomore Hunter Shepard made 22 saves to earn his third consecutive shutout. The Broncos were outshot 34-22 on the night and held scoreless on three power plays.
After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs took a lead on Kuhlman's first of the night just 1:45 into the second period. A power play goal by Dylan Samberg at 12:12 pushed the lead to 2-0.
UMD then scored five goals in the first 8:32 to put the game out of reach before Kuhlman completed his hat trick at 13:00 in the third period.
The two teams face off again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Broncos will celebrate the careers of seniors Paul Stoykewych, Aidan Muir, Neal Goff and Scott Moldenhauer prior to puck drop.
