KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team defeated No. 4/3 Minnesota-Duluth in a shootout to secure the extra point after a 1-1 tie with the Bulldogs on Saturday night.
Hugh McGing netted the winner in the third round of the sudden death shootout after a scoreless three-on-three overtime. McGing also netted WMU's lone goal of the game, while Trevor Gorsuch made a career-high 38 saves.
The Broncos (9-6-1, 4-3-1-1 NCHC) took a very early 1-0 lead just 46 seconds into the game on McGing's 10th goal of the season. Luke Bafia won the puck in front of the WMU bench and shifted it to Mattias Samuelsson out at center ice. Samuelsson found McGing streaking down the right side of the ice. The junior forward took the puck to the net and put it in with his backhand. Bafia picked up his third assist of the season, while Samuelsson notched his fifth.
Minnesota-Duluth equalized at 13:09 in the second period on a 4-on-3 power play. Noah Cates netted his fourth goal of the season on an open look from the slot.
UMD outshot WMU 39-23 on the night, including 13-7 in the third period but Gorsuch held strong to secure the tie.
Western Michigan heads into the semester break on a six-game undefeated streak, going 5-0-1. The Broncos are back in action at the Ice Vegas Invitational on Jan. 4-5, opening the tournament against UCONN on Friday, Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. Western Michigan returns home to host Miami on Jan. 11-12.
