Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Broncos Blank No.11 North Dakota, 2-0

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – On the back of 32 saves by senior goalie Trevor Gorsuch, the Western Michigan hockey team shutout No. 11 North Dakota, 2-0, on the road at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Friday night.

The shutout was the first over UND in program history. It was also the second shutout of the season for Gorsuch and a career-high in saves. The Broncos (5-6-0, 2-3-0 NCHC) picked up goals from Josh Passolt and Colt Conrad. Junior forward Hugh McGing had a game-high two assists. WMU was outshot 32-18 but the Bronco penalty kill finished a perfect 3-for-3.

The third period was a turning point for Western Michigan. Heading into the final 20 minutes, WMU was being outshot 28-8 but flipped the script on North Dakota and outshot them 11-4. Passolt's game-winner came at 12:24 in the third period. McGing centered the puck and it deflected off of Passolt and then off a Fighting Hawk defenseman and into the net for his fifth of the season. McGing tallied his fourth assist of the season and Kale Bennet picked up his second.

Conrad added an empty-net goal with 1:37 left for his fourth of the season. Passolt held the puck in the zone and passed it to McGing at the top of the left circle. The St. Louis Blues' draft pick then dished it off to Conrad in the slot for the goal.

Gorsuch made 16 saves in the first period, including eight on two UND power plays. He made another 12 in the second period.

The two teams battle it out again on Saturday at 8:07 p.m.
