CLEVELAND – After helping lead the Western Michigan volleyball team to a 2-0 record over the weekend, senior setter
Mary Murphy was named Mid-American Conference West Division Setter of the Week and junior
Kathleen Reilly was named MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week.
It's the second weekly honor for Murphy who finished the weekend with 87 assists, averaging a staggering 10.88 per set. Against Eastern Michigan on Friday, Murphy had 37 assists to go along with seven digs, two service aces and three kills.
Murphy followed up her performance with her fourth double-double of the season in a four-set victory over Central Michigan. The Wilmington, Ill., native registered 50 assists and 11 digs, marking the fourth time she has recorded at least 50 assists in a match. Murphy ends her career as WMU's all-time assists leader with 4,500 assists and ranks in the top ten in program history in assists per set.
Reilly anchored the Bronco defense en route to two four-set victories. Reilly led the team with 51 digs, averaging 6.36 per set. On Friday, Reilly had a team-high 23 digs along with three assists and three service aces. Against CMU Reilly registered 28 digs and four assists, ending the season with four straight matches of at least 20 digs.
The Overland Park, Kan., native ended the season with a team-high 544 digs, which ranks as the ninth most in a single-season in program history. Her 4.69 digs per set ranks as the eighth best in the MAC.
