KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team won its annual Border Battle game, defeating the University of Lethbridge 4-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,066 at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
The Broncos picked up a pair of goals from Colt Conrad, while Josh Passolt and Paul Cotter also tallied. Conrad added an assist for a three-point game, while junior forward Hugh McGIng had two assists in the victory. WMU outshot UL 47-11 on the night, with sophomore goalie Austin Cain making seven saves in two periods of action.
WMU took an early 1-0 lead with a goal during a 5-on-3 power play by Conrad at 3:29 in the first period. Dawson DiPietro had the puck down low and made a no-look pass to Conrad, for the tap-in goal. The Broncos quickly made it 2-0 just 11 seconds later, with Passolt driving the net and putting it past Pronghorn goalie Garret Hughson. Freshman defenseman Mattias Samuelsson and junior defenseman Luke Bafia each picked up assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
Lethbridge cut the lead in half at 14:05 in the first on a goal by Michael Grant.
Conrad struck again on the power play, this time at 3:42 in the second period. McGing found Conrad in the slot and he flipped it past Hughson for his second of the night, pushing the score to 3-1.
McGing and Conrad had a hand the final goal of the game at 14:51 in the second period. McGing broke up play in the neutral zone and dished it off to Conrad down the right wing. Conrad got near the bottom of the right circle and centered it to Cotter, who punched it in from the slot, extending the lead to 4-1.
Senior goalie Trevor Gorsuch started the third period and made three saves to hold the score and secure the win.
