KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In its first exhibition contest of the season Western Michigan men's basketball used a 23-9 run in the first ten minutes of the second half to defeat Northwood University, 86-66 on Saturday afternoon inside University Arena.
WMU had four players score in double figures as senior
Seth Dugan led the way with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. The Otsego, Mich., native also collected eight rebounds and was 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Kawanise "Squeaky" Wilkins ranked second on the team with 13 points to go along with three rebounds and one assist in 24 minutes played. Fellow sophomore
Michael Flowers had an all-around game for the Brown & Gold with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Rounding out the double-digit scoring was junior
Jared Printy with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field while knocking down two three-pointers. Senior
Josh Davis led the Broncos with nine rebounds and registered eight points, two assists, two blocks and one steal.
Overall the Broncos had 11 of the 13 players that saw the court score and shot 53.8 percent from the field. WMU was at the free-throw line early and often against the Timberwolves shooting 73.5 percent going 25-of-34.
Northwood shot just 39 percent from the field and was 9-of-26 from long distance. Defensively, the Broncos stifled the Timberwolves forcing 11 turnovers while having four blocks and four steals.
WMU will have its final tune-up on Saturday, Nov. 3 against neighbor Kalamazoo College before beginning the 2018-19 regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Detroit Mercy at 7:00 p.m.
It was a low scoring back and forth affair in the first half as WMU took a slim 37-36 lead into halftime. The Broncos raced out to a seven-point lead midway through the first thanks to a 10-0 run that gave WMU a 20-13 advantage. However, Northwood ended the half strong, embarking on an 8-2 run, making four straight field goals to cut the Bronco lead to one at halftime.
In the second half the Broncos stormed out of the gate with an 11-0 run to extend their lead to double digits and ultimately went on a 23-9 through the first ten minutes of play to take a 60-45 lead. The 23-9 run was highlighted by a monster put-back dunk by Davis and six points from Dugan.
Northwood responded late in the second half with a 6-0 run, knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to cut into the Bronco lead. Western Michigan responded to the Northwood run, making five of their next seven field goals to secure the 86-66 victory.
