BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Western Michigan hockey team fell short at No. 15 Bowling Green, 4-1 on Tuesday night at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
The win gave the Falcons their first sweep of the Broncos since Jan. 18-19, 2008.
WMU freshman defenseman Mattias Samuelsson netted his first collegiate goal at 2:04 in the first period to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead but it was all Bowling Green from there.
BGSU's Stephen Baylis tied the game at 1-1 on a short-handed goal with 2:02 left in the first period to send the teams into the locker room tied.
The Falcons took the lead on a power play goal by Max Johnson at 13:01 in the second period. Johnson was left alone in front starting goalie Austin Cain and slipped the puck between his legs for his third goal of the season. Bowling Green pushed the lead to 3-1 with 1:25 to go in the second period on a wrist shot by Lukas Craggs from the slot.
Sam Craggs put the Falcons up 4-1 with a shot from the slot, getting it past Trevor Gorsuch, who came on to start the third period in goal for WMU.
The Broncos were held to a season-low 20 shots and went 0-for-6 on the power play.
Western Michigan is off this weekend and begins National Collegiate Hockey Conference play at Denver on No. 2 and 3.
