Doug Marcero
Marcero, a native of New Baltimore, Mich., was a pitcher on the Western Michigan baseball team from 1986-89. Marcero had his most successful season as a senior in 1989, going 11-0 to set a program record for most wins and the highest winning percentage in a season. He was named First Team All-MAC and was the first Bronco to be named MAC Pitcher of the Year. The 1989 Bronco squad also set school team records for most wins (39) and conference wins (23).

 Q & A With Doug Marcero

Q: What was your reaction when you found out you were being inducted?

I never get too excited. I think that comes from playing sports, I never get too up or too down. I was excited for it, but I think my family was more excited for me. It's a great honor. I haven't been back for a long time so it will be exciting to come back and maybe see a couple coaches I haven't seen in a while and catch a football game.

Q: Do you have some favorite memories from your time playing at WMU?

Obviously my last year was exciting when we won the MAC Championship. That was the best part the year, going to regionals and playing at the University of Texas. That felt like we hit the big time there. I wish we would have done better, but that was the big highlight. I started a game against USC which was a great school and top-10 team.

I got to meet a lot of great teammates and people. Sports wise, my first couple of years were kind of up and down. Before I came back for my third year, I wasn't even sure if I was going to come back for a short period of time. I caught on my last couple of years and the rest was a pretty good ride.

Q: Who were some of the people at Western Michigan that made your time memorable?

I developed a core set of friends that hung out a lot together. Some were my teammates and some weren't. We were one group that did a lot of things together. I don't see them hardly at all anymore but I'm sure we all have fond memories of spending time together. With the guys that I played baseball with, the same goes there.

Q: Have you kept up with the program since you left?
I looked things up one in a while and try to follow along. I know a couple of my coaches' sons played and try to keep track of guys that are coming and going, along with guys that are getting drafted. There's a big sense of pride in those things.

Q: What has life been like for you since leaving Western Michigan?

It has been a steady as she goes type of thing. I work at Ford Motor Company and have been there for 25 years. I have twins, a son and a daughter. They're 16 now and getting ready to drive, which is fun. I've been married for 22 years now, and she went to Central Michigan.
