BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Western Michigan scored five second half touchdowns to overcome a 21-7 halftime deficit, defeating Bowling Green on the road, 42-35, Saturday, Oct. 13. The win was the Broncos' fifth in a row, as the team improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference.
Running backs
Jamauri Bogan and
LeVante Bellamy led the WMU ground game which totaled 199 of its 283 yards rushing in the second half. Bogan scored four of the team's six touchdowns for his third four-touchdown performance of his career. The last time he rushed for four TDs in a game was in 2015 when he was named MVP of the Bahamas Bowl.
Bellamy ran for a season-high 145 yards off on 24 carries, coming four yards shy of his career high. Bellamy had just 34 yards on seven carries in the first half before exploding for 111 yards on 14 carries in the second half.
The Bronco defense allowed 511 yards but came up with big plays down the stretch. Western Michigan forced four Falcon turnovers on two fumbles and two interceptions. Both of the fumble recoveries were converted to touchdowns.
Quarterback
Jon Wassink completed 22 passes on 37 attempts, totaling 286 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for a career-high 40 yards.
The Broncos got a collective effort from the receiving core with
Giovanni Ricci,
Keishawn Watson,
Jayden Reed, and Bellamy recording at least four receptions each. Watson and
D'Wayne Eskridge scored touchdowns.
Bowling Green took a 14-0 lead to start the game after a 74-yard run by Andrew Clair and a 76-yard reception by Scott Miller. Bogan punched in his first TD for the Broncos with 5:36 remaining in the first half. The Falcons scored on a 5-yard pass at the end of the half to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Broncos outscored Bowling Green 21-7 in the third quarter to tie the game at 28-28. Bogan earned his second TD with a 5-yard run to open the quarter and Wassink connected on both of his touchdown passes in the third. The first TD throw was a 24-yarder to Eskridge, in which Eskridge made a great over-the-shoulder catch down the right sideline. Wassink's second TD went to Watson for 16 yards, just before the end of the quarter. Watson had the ball knocked out of his hands after the catch, but scooped up the loose ball and ran it into the end zone.Â
Bowling Green scored first in the fourth quarter to briefly regain the lead, 35-28. Bogan powered in his final two touchdowns and the Bronco defense held firm as WMU closed out the 42-35 come-from-behind victory.
Bowling Green had a final hope, driving into the red zone with less than three minutes remaining, but
Justin Tranquill rushed BG quarterback Jarrett Doege on 4th-and-3, forcing Doege into a bad throw. Bronco cornerback
Anton Curtis was able to make the pick for his first career interception. Curtis would also come up with an interception on a desperation play by the Falcons as time expired in the game.
Defensively, Tranquill led WMU with nine tackles, while
Corvin Moment and
Najee Clayton each forced fumbles, along with the two interceptions from Curtis.
The Broncos amassed 568 yards of total offense. WMU held a 33-19 advantage on first downs and won the time of possession 38:11 to 21:49.
Western Michigan travels to Mount Pleasant, Mich., next Saturday Oct. 20 to face rival Central Michigan. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. with the game being broadcasted on ESPN .
