51-Point Second Half Lifts Men’s Basketball to Victory over EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball used a 51-point second half to earn its first victory in Ypsilanti since 2011 as the Broncos defeated Eastern Michigan, 71-57 inside the Convocation Center on Tuesday night.

After going 0-of-7 from the three-point line in the first half, WMU went 7-of-9 the final 20 minutes of play and outscored EMU, 51-36 in the second half. The Broncos improve their overall record to 13-9 and 5-4 in Mid-American Conference play.

It's a quick turnaround for WMU as the Brown & Gold travel to Buffalo for a showdown with the Bulls on Friday, Jan. 2 on CBS Sports Network.

It was a tale of two halves for the Broncos as WMU trailed heading into halftime after going 0-of-7 from beyond the three-point line while shooting just 28.1 percent from the field. The Broncos jumped out quickly to a 13-9 lead with senior Drake LaMont scoring seven of the 13 points for the Brown & Gold.

Down the stretch in the first half, WMU was held scoreless for nearly four minutes as the Eagles clawed their way back to take a four-point lead with just under a minute remaining. After three points at the free-throw line, EMU led 21-20 at the half.

WMU raced out of the gate to start the second half, embarking on a 5-0 run to regain the lead just three minutes into the second. The Western Michigan lead grew to as many as 21 in the second half thanks to an overall 21-2 run which included four straight threes. During the run, Jones and Moore combined to score 14 points.
