BUFFALO, N.Y. – On the road in front of a sellout crowd of over 6,000 inside Alumni Arena, Western Michigan men's basketball fell to Buffalo, 92-86 Friday night on CBS Sports Network.
WMU cut the Buffalo lead to six with 20 seconds left but the Bulls pulled away late with free-throws despite the Broncos making four of its last five shots. The loss snaps
WMU's two-game win streak and drops their overall record to 13-10 and 5-5 in Mid-American Conference play.
The Broncos are at home for its next two games against Miami (Feb. 6) and Ohio (Feb. 10).
Senior guard
Thomas Wilder recorded his fourth 30-point performance of the year, registering 34 points to go along with six rebounds. Wilder shot 58 percent (10-of-17) from the floor while also going 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. From beyond the three-point line, the Montgomery, Ill., native collected three of the team's four three's on the night.
Sophomore
Brandon Johnson notched his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson from the field went 6-of-10 in a career-high 37 minutes played. Johnson scored nine of his 13 points in the second half.
Also scoring in double figures was senior
Drake LaMont with 12 points to go with two rebounds and two assists. LaMont like Johnson shot a staggering 6-of-10 from the field.
Rounding out the double digit scoring was sophomore
Reggie Jones off the bench with 11 points. Jones captured 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and also had four rebounds and one steal.
As a team the Broncos shot 47.7 percent from the field while the Bulls shot a staggering 58.6 percent. WMU was successful at the free-throw line, going 20-of-27 but was unable to find the range from long distance, recording just four threes. The Bronco offense came to life in the second half as the Brown & Gold shot 57.1 percent from the field.
Buffalo proved why they are the league's most potent offense, scoring 92 points, shooting 58.6 percent from the field. UB's CJ Massinburg led Buffalo with 26 points and Wes Clark neared a triple-double with 13 points, six rebounds and nine assists.
In the paint WMU outscored Buffalo, 50-38 while the Bulls held a slim advantage in rebounding, 33-32. The Broncos forced the Bulls to commit 13 turnovers, scoring 17 points off those turnovers. With the victory, Buffalo has an overall record of 17-6 and 9-1 in MAC play.
It was a back and forth duel to begin the game as both teams shot over 80 percent en route to a 9-9 tie five minutes into the game. After a media timeout, Buffalo embarked on a 12-0 run to extend their lead to double digits midway through the first. WMU shot just 36.7 percent in the first half as the Bulls made seven of their last nine shots to take a 41-30 lead into halftime.
In the second half WMU outscored Buffalo, 56-51 and started the second half fast scoring five straight points to cut into the Bulls lead. The Broncos slimmed the UB lead to five at the midway point of the second half after making eight straight field goals. However, Buffalo still held on to the lead, making eight of 10 field goals during the Bronco run
With under a minute left, WMU cut the Buffalo lead to six after back-to-back turnovers by the Bulls gave WMU hope of a comeback. The Broncos made four of their final six baskets but Buffalo capitalized on free-throws at the end to secure the Friday night victory.
