"The story line at the end of the day was that we couldn't keep them off the offensive glass," commented WMU head coach
Shane Clipfell. "We have to give them credit, they can go up and get it at the rim and we couldn't keep them off the glass. I thought we competed tonight and we were in the game from beginning to end but Eastern is a good team and they continue to get better and better this season. Tonight is just something we have to build on moving forward."
WMU started off slow shooting just 2-for-8 from the field but outscored the Eagles 22-17 in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into the locker room. In the first half, the Broncos seemed to have no answer for Eastern Michigan's Danielle Minott who scored 21 of her career-high 29 points in the first 40 minutes.
The second half proved to be a game of runs, but with under 10 seconds to play in regulation redshirt junior
Jasmyn Walker converted 1-of-2 from the line to even the score and push the game into overtime. The Broncos found themselves having the ball again in the final seconds for a chance to win the game but the shot rattled out as WMU is now 1-1 against MAC West opponents and 3-5 this season on the road.
Eastern Michigan entered the night forcing 21 turnovers a game but the Broncos coughed it up just 12 times. The offensive glass proved to be a big factor on the night as the Eagles grabbed 27 compared to just 14 for the Brown and Gold. The Broncos were also outrebounded 53-38 and gave up 31 second-chance points.
As a team, the Broncos shot 40.6 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent for the game. The Brown and Gold shot 21-of-56 and did damage from the free-throw line, going 20-for-26 from the charity stripe.
Leading the way for the Brown and Gold was junior
Breanna Mobley who notched her eighth double-double of the season and her 27
th career for WMU. She scored a team-high 21 points, four points shy of her 1,000
th, picked up 10 rebounds and delivered three blocks. Â
Western Michigan's bench came to play, outscoring the Eagles' bench 33-7, highlighted by junior
Meredith Miller. Miller scored a season-high 11 points off of 4-of-5 shooting including 3-for-4 from three-point territory. Freshman
Nina Farkic scored a career-high eight points off the bench with six of those coming from the charity stripe. Junior
Deja Wimby, who has been on fire since conference play, tallied six points to go along with five assists.
The Broncos make a short trip back home this Saturday, Jan. 20, welcoming Miami inside University Arena at 2 p.m. for "Daddy/Daughter Day", before returning to the road for their next two games at Akron (Jan. 24) and MAC West leader Central Michigan (Jan. 27).
