The Bronco starting five scored 78 of the team's 81 points, going 29-for-49 from the hardwood. Junior
Breanna Mobley became the 26
th member of the WMU 1,000-point club as she poured in a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds. The forward added nine points from the charity stripe, shooting 9-of-10.
"To think that Breanna has scored that much in the amount of time that she has done it in, is outstanding," commented WMU head coach
Shane Clipfell. "People might not understand that she played very sparingly as a freshman until the last seven or eight games left in the season. She has really accomplished the feat in a small window."
Junior counterpart
Deja Wimby continued her dominance in MAC play, pouring in 20 points, off 8-of-11 shooting, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Redshirt senior
Marley Hill added 18 points respectively while redshirt junior
Jasmyn Walker recorded her first double-double in a Bronco uniform with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Brown and Gold shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first half but it wasn't enough to keep up with Miami, who was shooting at a 58.6 rate. Both teams turned the ball over just four times, respectively but the RedHawks took a 45-35 lead into the locker room.
Trailing by 10 points, the Broncos held the RedHawks scoreless for almost four minutes and garnered the first six points in the second half en route to a 24-9 third quarter for Western Michigan. In the final stanza, Miami worked the deficit down to as little as two but 11 WMU fourth-quarter free throws and a clutch three pointer from senior
Najee Smith sealed the comeback victory.
The RedHawks were led by the MAC's leading scoring Lauren Dickerson and Kendall McCoy as they both tallied 20 points. Combined the two scored 33 in the first half but the Broncos tightened the defense in the second, holding them to just seven more. Â
"Credit goes to the assistant coaches on wanting to switch to zone," noted Clipfell. "We decided to go to zone in the second half to see how they would respond to it. We also did a good job of keeping our hands up in her (Dickerson) face so she had a bad view of the bucket."
For the game, the Brown and Gold shot a staggering 55.6 percent on the night while maintaining Miami to 46.6 percent. Defensively the Broncos forced 11 turnovers as Wimby tallied four of the five total team steals. WMU turned the ball over just 10 times while outrebounding the RedHawks, 31-24. Â
Western Michigan hits the road next week for a mini road stand in league play, traveling to Akron on Wednesday, Jan. 24 and MAC West leader Central Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 27 before returning home the following week.
