FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Grace Labadie scored her second goal of the year and Stephanie Heber needed o make just three saves as the Western Michigan women's soccer team blanked the Fort Wayne Mastodons on the road on Sunday afternoon.
WMU (3-2-0) snapped a two-game skid with its second shutout and second road shutout of the season. The Broncos outshot Fort Wayne 13-6, landing six of their shots on target.
"I'm very proud of the team and how they battled out a win on the road," said head coach Lauren Sinacola. "I felt we had strong possession in the first half but forced a lot of things that weren't on in the final third. We started strong and fast in the second half, creating multiple opportunities allowing us to set the temp for the rest of the game. It was a strong team effort today and it gives us a lot to build off of moving into next weekend."
After a scoreless first half that saw each team tally three shots, the Broncos took control in the second. WMU fired off 10 of its 13 shots in the second 45 and broke through in the 74th minute. Freshman Ashleigh Garcia played the ball to Labadie and she fired one from the right side of the box. Fort Wayne goalkeeper Haley Lydon got a piece of it but it went off of her hand and into the net. Labadie's tally was also her second game-winning goal of the season. Garcia picked up her second assist of the season on the goal.
Western Michigan returns home to take on Youngstown State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
