KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Three different Broncos scored as the Western Michigan women's soccer team blanked Youngstown State, 3-0, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Tiffany Buckler,
Grace Labadie and
Maria Jaramillo all found the back of the net for WMU (4-2-0), while
Alex Ruffer had two assists.
Stephanie Heber needed to make just two saves to earn the team's third shutout of the season and extending a shutout streak to 194 minutes.
"We created some really nice opportunities with good buildup, combinations and getting to the end line to get off crosses," said head coach
Lauren Sinacola. "Youngstown created a lot of opportunities early in the second half but the goal Grace scored, and it was a beautiful goal, all came against the run of play. It really helped flip things around to help us finish the game out."
The Bronco attack poured in on early, with WMU registering 15 total shots in the first 45 minutes. WMU broke through in the 26th minute on Buckler's first goal of the season.
Alyssa Smith took it down the left flank and found Ruffer at the top of the box. Ruffer flicked it back to Buckler and the senior buried the shot from 18 yards into the left corner of the net.
WMU added to the lead in the 58th minute when Ruffer set up Labadie for her third goal of the season. Ruffer played it into the box and the Labadie for the finish to give Western Michigan a 2-0 lead.
The Broncos put the game out of reach later in the 75th minute when
Victoria McCartney was hauled down in the box. McCartney took the ball into the box on the right side and made a cut towards goal before being dragged down by a YSU defender. Jaramillo stepped up and buried the penalty kick for her first goal of the season and handing WMU a 3-0 lead.
