Darius Phillips has been named the Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Phillips had a 100-yard kickoff return in a 28-14 loss at Michigan State this past Saturday. He totaled four kickoff returns for 181 yards and the 100-yard return for a touchdown. It was the second straight week Phillips has taken a 100-yard return to the house, also doing so in the season-opener at No. 4 USC on Sept. 2.
Phillips now has four 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns and five overall kickoff returns for touchdowns. It was the second time with a 100-yard return against Michigan State in his career, his first was in 2015.
In addition to the 100-yarder, Phillips also had returns of 52, 18 and 11 yards. Phillips accounted for both Western Michigan scores against Michigan State, also forcing a fumble and then recovering the ball for a 67-yard touchdown. On top of the two scores, he added an interception and tied a career-high with three pass breakups.
