CHICAGO- Western Michigan and DePaul faced off in an exhibition match Sunday, marking the Broncos' first preseason contest of the 2017 season. The two sides played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and settled the score in penalty kicks rather than overtime play. Western Michigan came away with the win, 4-2 on PKs.

"Overall I was pleased with the 90 minutes," said WMU head coach Chad Wiseman. "We had many questions headed into the contest, we didn't get them all answered but we return home knowing a lot more about this team."

WMU starting goalkeeper Drew Shepherd made three first half saves and turned another away in the second half, playing just over 70 minutes. Neither team managed a goal in the first half, but DePaul's Phillipp Konigstein was able to tuck in a free kick from 25 yards out in the 74th minute against Bronco reserve keeper Elijah Michaels.

Western Michigan tied the game with just less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Jay McIntosh crossed a ball in to Anthony Bowie who finished with a quick flick in.

The contest moved into penalty kicks to determine the winner. Both sides made their first two penalty kick attempts, advancing to the third player. McIntosh netted his shot to put the Broncos up 3-2 and Michaels deflected DePaul's third attempt to give WMU the edge. Kosti Moni then stepped up to push Western Michigan's advantage to 4-2, making good on his shot, putting pressure on DePaul to extend the shootout. The Blue Demons' final shot sailed wide, sealing the Bronco victory.

"We conceded a very poor goal in regulation, that can't happen and the guys know that," Wiseman said. "The response was great, I was very happy to see that from the team.

"We have a lot of competition within our roster. Players continue to fight for starting spots and rotation spots. We'll have another good week of training and work to be better for our last exhibition."

On August 19, the team will head to Detroit for their last exhibition game prior to beginning the regular season. Western Michigan's home opener will be on August 25 against LIU Brooklyn at the WMU Soccer Complex at 5 p.m.
