"It was a great day to pitch. Wind blowing straight in and cold temperatures," head coach Billy Gernon said. "We didn't show enough patience today and didn't make the necessary adjustments to the weather and what type of pitcher we were facing. Piechota was outstanding on the mound for us."
Both teams finished with four hits, but Toledo was able to push one run across in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Rockets also finished with four errors, none of them costly enough to help the Broncos push across a run.
Jacob Piechota had a great outing, but suffered the loss, pitching 7.0 innings allowing just one run on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Kyle Mallwitz entered to throw a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout as well.
WMU put at least one runner on in six of the nine innings, but Toledo's pitching staff tightened up when needed. Senior Nick Vogelmeier finished with two hits in the leadoff spot, while Connor Smith went 1-for-3 with a walk and Tanner Allison finished 1-for-4.
WMU and Toledo will square two more times before the weekend is over, first on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. then again on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
