EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tanner Allison hit a grand slam and
Kyle Mallwitz threw 6.0 innings of scoreless relief to help the Western Michigan baseball team (9-7) win its series over Evansville with a 4-3 victory in the series finale on Sunday in Evansville.
All runs for both teams came in the third inning. The Broncos led off the top of the third with the first three men reaching base prior to Allison.
Nick Vogelmeier had a bunt single to reach base and advanced to second when
Connor Smith was hit by a pitch.
Grant Miller loaded the bases with the team's second infield hit of the inning. Allison then launched his sixth home run of the season to right field.
It was the team's first grand slam since
Hunter Prince hit a walkoff grand slam in the MAC Tournament last season. Allison and Miller each finished the day with three hits apiece.
On the mound, Mallwitz (4-1) picked up his second win of the series, striking out three batters in his six innings of relief against just one walk. He allowed just three hits as he lowered his season ERA to 1.57 in nine appearances.
The Broncos will now turn their attention to B1G opponent Michigan on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
