Head Coach Clipfell Earns 100th Career Victory as WMU Defeats Goshen 87-36

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team picked up its third-straight victory on Tuesday evening as the Broncos defeated Goshen College 87-36, wrapping up non-conference play with an overall record of 7-5 including a 4-0 home record. The win also gives WMU head coach Shane Clipfell his 100th career victory as the Broncos have now won five of their last six games.

"We are happy with how we performed, I felt we stayed locked into what we were trying to do," commented Clipfell. "It was nice to see the ball go through the net from the arc and most of that came from our bench and that's what can be the difference maker for this team. I liked that we didn't foul on defense, we got out in transition for some points and we had 23 assists to only 10 turnovers which was a main focus for us."

It was a total team effort for the Broncos as 14 of the 16 players that found the court scored. Following the win, three players also scored in double figures for the third consecutive game. WMU shot a staggering 50.0 percent from the court with a season-high 36 field goals made to go along with a season-high 47.1 percent from behind the arc.

Junior Breanna Mobley led all players with 22 points and eight rebounds, shooting an impressive 10-for-13 from the floor in just 20 minutes. The Lansing, Mich., native has been a dominant force this season, averaging 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds through the first 12 games.

Fellow junior Meredith Miller recorded her best scoring game of the season with 10 points, knocking down two three-pointers, to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Freshman Leighah-Amori Wool had her best game in a Brown and Gold uniform with a career-high 11 points, including nine points from long range, three assists, three rebounds and a steal. In her first career start, freshman Nina Farkic added five assists to go along three points that came from a half court buzzer beater to end the third quarter.

In a game that WMU lead wire-to-wire, the Brown and Gold jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the first four minutes of play. The Broncos gave up just three points in the second quarter, tying WMU's fewest points allowed in a quarter since women's basketball switched back to the quarter format in the 2015-16 season. WMU took a 27-point lead into the break also in part to an incredible 62.5 percent shooting clinic from three-point land in the second quarter.

The second half was much of the same as Western Michigan allowed just 26 points en route to its seventh victory of the season, defeating the Maple Leafs 87-36. The last time a Bronco squad gave up 36 points or fewer occurred during the 2011-12 season under head coach Tasha McDowell as WMU defeated Southeast Missouri State, 67-34. The 49-point win is tied for the third largest margin of victory in WMU program history.

Western Michigan dominated in every facet of the game tonight. Defensively the Broncos grabbed 13 steals and tied a season-high seven blocks. WMU outscored Goshen 42-6 in the paint to go along with 17 second chance points. The bench came to play as well, adding 48 points compared to Goshen's 20.

"We know the task becomes very difficult for us each and every time we take the court coming into the conference season," noted Clipfell. "I think we have prepared our team for it and they know that the team that performs the most consistent in this league will be the team that has the best chance to earn a championship."

The Broncos will now begin Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. as the Falcons of Bowling Green head into Kalamazoo. BGSU currently holds an 8-2 overall record with a 3-1 record on the road.
